In the fall, we received two personal heart-felt letters from Coach Rob Childress, head baseball coach, and Coach Matt Deggs, Offensive Coach.
They remember Spencer from his baseball camps at Texas A&M and clearly remember his zest for life, his strength and love for baseball, and recall singing Happy Birthday
to him with the entire baseball team on his 6th birthday while attending Baseball Camp on December 9, 2006. Coach Deggs told us that A&M holds the Big 12 record for stolen bases, and that the team wanted to dedicate their first stolen base of the season this year to Spencer. What an honor! So, for the first game on Friday, February 22, we were in College Station for the season-opener. The players made an attempt or two in the first inning to steal a base. The real excitement came in the 2nd inning when Player Jose Duran made the steal at 2nd base.
The announcer enthusiastically announced into the microphone " This one is for Spencer!" and Duran picked up the base, ran off the field and handed the base to Coach Childress who then handed it to Patrick and Ryan down in the dug out. It was awesome. They personalized the base (pictures attached ) to dedicate this stolen base to Spencer. What a fun day! And as we were walking out of the game, I looked up at the white board which had the team line-up listed on it. There in front of me it read "#6 Duran SS" - Spencer's initials of course right by Duran's name since he is the "Short Stop" and the fact that he was #6 was a neat little "Spencer wink" also from up above. As Coach Childress said, "Spencer and God made that happen" since they had no idea which player it would be who would steal the base. J We truly appreciate the A&M Baseball Team - players and coaches - for their continued support and Aggie love.
They truly reflect the Spirit of the 12th Man by thinking of others! Gig'em Aggie Baseball Team and keep stealing those bases!
